Did Dracula live at Bran Castle?
No. Vlad the Impaler (the historical figure behind the Dracula legend) was born in 1431 in Sighișoara, 90 km north of Bran. He ruled from Poenari Castle in the Argeș valley, not Bran. The association between Vlad and Bran is fictional marketing inspired by Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel, which was itself inspired by the castle’s location and layout, not by any actual residence.
Bran was built by Saxons in 1377 as a trade fortress. Vlad may have passed nearby during Ottoman campaigns, but historians have no records of him living there. Poenari Castle, ruins on a cliff with 1,480 stone steps, is the historical fortress linked to Vlad.
